Intermediate
& Advanced Painting: Spaces, Interiors & Perspective

Working
from observation on site at locations around Oyster bay, students
will learn to develop convincing architectural compositions. Demonstration
and lecture topics will include: compositional design, perspective
(both projective and atmospheric), the anatomy of light and the
handling of materials.
(Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting)
These are suggested materials. Always try to get the best you can
afford. Feel free to bring other favorites.
We will begin the first day with drawing, so have those materials
on hand.
Drawing Materials
Framing device; buy one at an art supply store or make your own:
cut two right angles out of a piece of foam core or cardboard around
12"x12"
Pencils:
F, 2B etc. up to 8B, a few of each
Exacto knife
Chamois cloth
Kneaded eraser
Medium grit sandpaper or sanding board for sharpening pencils
2 Bulldog Clips
Straight edge; at least 12 inches
Knitting needle
Drawing paper pad
white, 70lb press, acid free, 18"x 24"
Sketchbook; no larger than 8,1/2"x11" (always carry one
with you for studies, notes and
inspirational materials)
Plumbline: you can get the professional carpenters
kind, but a thick piece of black thread
(about two feet in length) with a weight on one end will do fine
Painting Materials
Suggested Oil Paint Brands: Old Holland, Winsor Newton
or Holbein. If you have another favorite, feel free to bring that.

Turpenoid and Cold Pressed Linseed Oil: there are
all sorts of recipes for mediums, some more complicated than others.
For our purposes we will use a Turpentine/linseed oil mixture which
is both simple and effective. Odourless turps only please.
Please bring to class a small glass jar with your pre-mixed medium=
1/8 part linseed oil to 1 part turps.
Palette
get one of the kidney shaped kind. If its brand new and an unfinished
surface, make sure you prepare it before you come to class. (Give
it a light sanding until smooth and wipe off the excess dust. With
a rag, rub in enough linseed oil to cover the entire surface. Do
this in two or three thin coats letting each coat dry before applying
the next.
An alternative to this method is to apply a coat of shellac after
the sanding.)
2 palette cups; one for your medium the other for turps
2 small clean, empty jars with lids (baby food jars are perfect)
Brushes
an assortment of types and sizes; rounds, flats, filberts, brights
etc.; sizes 0,2,4 up to 10 or so.
There are some quality synthetic brushes that are reasonably priced,
and fine for our purposes. Try da Vinci Nova synthetics, Windsor
and Newton University or Princeton Art & Brush Co.
For Poster Studies I use larger (proportionate to the small canvas
surface) brushes:
# 4,5 or 6 Flats are preferable
Rags (cotton) or Paper towels (Viva)
Painting surfaces
4 or 5 small stretched canvas or prepared panel; say 10"x12",
12"x16" or 12"x18" for example. Stretch your
own if you know how or buy them pre-made. No Larger than 18x 24.
