This pottery class is for all levels.
Because we maintain a small class size, students will be
given the individual attention they need to excel in this
class regardless of their experience. There are no prerequisites
to this class. During Spring and Summer Terms, all pottery
classes may involve a few days of Raku style pottery making.
Beginners.
Students taking pottery for the first time will learn the
basic techniques to creating beautiful pieces on the potter's
wheel. Basic forms will be studied to create and glaze place
settings - plates, bowls, and mugs. These are the fundamental
shapes from which all wheel-thrown pots are formed.
Intermediate. Once
the instructor feels that the student has understood how
to create basic forms, students will move onto bolder techniques
such as:
- "Throwing Off a Mound",
- Altering forms
- Oval Casseroles
- Narrow-neck bottles
- Closed Forms
- Pots with Covers.
Advanced. Once
the student has mastered the techniques listed above, the
student will be ready to move onto more advanced pottery
forms such as large vessels, and advanced glazing techniques.
Raku Pottery. Raku
style of creating pottery will be offered by both Peggy
and Gina during certain scheduled class times when weather
permits in the Spring and Summer terms. Please contact our
Pottery Department Head, Peggy Simmons for Raku class times
and dates.
